Truth

By Amyra Akhtar

‘Hi, dad.’

I stood in the doorway, nervous.

‘Bubblegum.’ He smiled. ‘Come here. You said you wanted to talk to me about something?’

‘Dad,’ I whispered, sitting on the soft couch. ‘Um..Jasper proposed to me.’

I felt my dad shake up and down.

‘Dad?’ I asked. ‘Are you..crying?’

‘It’s nothing,’ He sobbed quietly. ‘Your mom would have been heck proud, Bubble. And if you’re worried, don’t be. You can marry him.’

‘WHAT?! Dad, oh my gosh, thank you!’ I threw my arms around his neck.

Micheal walked in. ‘What’s going on?’ He asked.

‘Your sister’s getting married.’ Dad’s glassy eyes crinkled at the sides as he grinned.

‘Really?’ Michael turned to me. ‘W-wow!’

I called Jasper.

‘Hi, darling.’

‘Darling? Wait! Bubblegum..??’

‘Yes.’

‘Oh my god! Yes!’ I could hear Jasper smile through the phone. ‘That’s amazing, Bubble!’

‘I know. Do you mind meeting up?’

‘Not at all.’ He whispered.

We met at the park, and I hugged him. His gorgeous blue eyes locked on mine happily, and he kissed me under the dark sky.

‘Oh, Jasper. I have to go, but see you tomorrow?’ I asked.

‘Of course.’ He smiled warmly.

I skipped home and got into bed, eager to tell my BFFs the next day.

I woke up, took a shower, put on a hoodie, some jeans, sneakers, lip gloss, brushed my hair, grabbed my bag and ran to school.

‘Hey!’ Nature called me. They were waiting for me at my locker.

‘Guys, I’m getting married to Jasper!’

‘YAY!’ My friends squealed.

‘I KNOW! I’m so excited..’ As I continued talking, I felt Lisa shove me roughly in the back.

‘Ow!’ I yelled.

Jasper walked up to us, concerned. But his eyes were not on Lisa.

They were locked on me.

He helped me up. ‘Go away, Lisa.’ He grumbled. ‘You can’t touch her!’

‘Yeah,’ said Marcus. He and the other guys surrounded me protectively, while my BFFs glared at Lisa.

‘Okay, I’m lost here,’ She smirked. ‘Are you two like..’

‘None of your business!’ I yelled.

‘Whatever.’ Her cold eyes glittered with fire as she flipped her long blonde ponytail and walked away.

Jasper took my arm and we walked off to our next class. For my main subject in college, I’d chosen fashion designing. I was suer excited! Nature had applied for being a florist, Mackenzie for artist, and Lucia for sports. I was so happy for me and my BFF’s!!

As I entered the class, Jasper looked at me, his blue eyes shining. ‘It’ll be okay,’ He whispered, grabbing my hand.

‘Thanks.’ I grinned. Lisa rolled her eyes, but I didn’t care!

Later, as the bell rang for lunch, I grabbed my bag full of books. Ugh, college was hard for SURE!!

Mackenzie, looking at Marcus, shared a concerned look. So did the others.

‘Guys, I’m okay, okay?’ I snapped.

Jasper, who knew what to do if I’d had a bad day like this, kissed me hard and then pulled me to him. The strands of his white hair brushed against my cheeks as he hugged me, and I instantly smiled.

‘There you go. Normal again!’ Jasper beamed at the others proudly, and I shoved him playfully.

As I sipped my strawberry milkshake, I felt totally at ease with my friends. Who cared about Lisa, anyway?

‘Oh!’ Mackenzie’s yelp startled me. ‘I TOTALLY forgot! Prom is literally 2 days away!!’

‘You’re right!’ I gasped. I thought about my gorgeous red dress, hanging safely, unused in the back of my closet.

‘I’m SO excited,’ Lucia giggled. Then she looked behind my shoulders. ‘Hey, Coral!’ She called out.

Coral, our friend, walked over to us.

‘Guys, guess what?!’

Max, a football player and a friend of Jasper’s, stood behind her, his arm linked with hers.

‘We’re going to Prom together!’ She squealed happily. I was so happy for my friend!

And I knew we were gonna have a blast at Prom!
